Blood in the Urine
Blood in the urine: causes, symptoms and treatment options
Traces of blood in the urine, whether visible or only recognizable in the urine strip test, can indicate diseases of the bladder, kidneys and other urinary tract organs and should always be clarified. Especially if there is visible blood in the urine and you have no pain (a so-called painless macrohaematuria), this can be an indication of serious illnesses such as a tumor of the bladder.
Smokers are particularly at risk, as toxins from cigarette smoke can accumulate in the urine and affect the bladder over a long period of time. We can use ultrasound and cystoscopy to quickly clarify the source of the blood. During a cystoscopy, the bladder is inspected painlessly using a very thin instrument with a camera. However, even malignant tumors of the bladder can usually be cured if detected in time.
Blood in the urine can also have harmless causes and occur in healthy people, particularly after extreme physical exertion. Nevertheless, further clarification by a urologist is always recommended in order to be able to rule out kidney stones or cancer with certainty.
