Details of the International Health Tourism Complication Insurance


What is Health Tourism Complication Insurance?

As Pharmalps, in order to make sure we provide the best health tourism services to our patients, we have been working with experienced insurance companies in Turkey.

Health Tourism Complication Insurance provides coverage for foreign nationals undergoing medical procedures in Turkey, ensuring protection against complications that may arise post-operation, necessitating revision or renewal of the procedure. It covers complications arising directly from the operation, excluding any other complications or damages resulting from malpractice or the insured’s additional health conditions. The policy is valid for a period of 6 months from the start date.

Who Can Be Insured?

The age limit for coverage is between 5 and 75 years old, with individuals aged 75 and above excluded from coverage. Policy issuance requires a passport number.

Geographical Coverage

This policy is valid only for treatments related to complications of surgeries/procedures and medical treatments performed in Turkey after the policy start date, provided that the treatments are carried out within the borders of the Republic of Turkey.

Inpatient Treatment Coverage:

Medical complications arising after surgeries, procedures, and medical interventions performed on the insured in a healthcare institution accredited for Health Tourism within the borders of Turkey are covered under this policy, subject to the coverage limits and rates specified in the policy and certificate for treatments indicated in the policy plans. Displeasure arising from personal preferences in aesthetic surgeries and dental treatments is not covered under this policy. Coverage is applicable only for the surgery or procedure specified in the policy, and complications arising from medical treatments or procedures outside the relevant policy plan are excluded from coverage. Expenses required for revision surgery or procedure to treat complications are covered, while rehabilitation and physiotherapy expenses that may be required after surgery/procedure are not covered. Tests and medications required for medical procedures are also covered under this policy. Diagnostic procedures performed beyond standard pre-operative tests required for medical intervention and medications unrelated to the surgery are not covered. Supportive treatments (such as intravenous infusions, supportive medication treatments, blood sugar, and blood pressure regulation) before and after both the initial surgery and revision surgery/procedure, as well as additional examinations and follow-up tests planned/required for other health issues unrelated to the surgery, are not covered under this policy.

Airfare Coverage:

In the event that the insured requires treatment for a complication arising from a treatment performed in Turkey or revision surgery, the cost of an economy class airfare from their home country to Turkey will be reimbursed, subject to the specified limit and deductible in the policy. The airfare coverage limit may vary across different plans, so please check your certificate. The coverage is indicated on the certificate and/or policy. The airfare coverage has a deductible of 100 EUR and the maximum coverage amount that can be paid may vary depending on the plan, with the coverage limit specified on the certificate and policy.

Accommodation Coverage:

In the event that the insured requires treatment for a complication arising from a treatment performed in Turkey or revision surgery, accommodation expenses incurred outside of the healthcare facility before and after treatment in Turkey will be covered up to a maximum daily limit of 100 EUR and a total limit not exceeding the coverage limit specified in the policy or certificate. Accommodation expenses have a deductible of 200 EUR/2 days for surgical plans and 100 EUR/1 day for other plans, and coverage is applicable after the deductible period specified in the policy. Accommodation coverage for non-medical requirements is optional and not included. The necessity for accommodation is determined by medical reports


Intervention in Home Country Coverage:

This coverage can be optionally selected. Minor interventions and medical treatments related to early complications, such as discharge or infection at the site of medical intervention/surgery upon the insured’s return to their home country, which do not require rehospitalization, are covered under this policy within the limits specified in the policy and certificate. To claim reimbursement for such expenses incurred in their home country, the insured must submit the original medical report, invoices, and bank account information (swift, IBAN) for payment via postal mail. After assessment, payments for expenses covered under the coverage are made to the insured’s bank account within the coverage limits. Transfer swift charges are deducted from the coverage limits in claim payments. 

Companion for Patient in the Hospital Expense Coverage:

 This can be optionally selected only in Surgical and Cardiovascular Surgery plans. The relevant coverage and limits are not applicable for the initial intervention/surgery to be performed in Turkey. In the event that policy coverage comes into effect during the insured’s secondary intervention, transportation and accommodation expenses for an accompanying escort to Turkey are reimbursed within the coverage limits and deductible as specified in the policy and certificate. Escort expenses on the hospital invoice during the hospital stay are not covered.

Travel Policy Coverage:

This coverage is available in all plans. Expenses related to health, ambulance, medical consultancy, and repatriation of mortal remains, as specified in the certificate and policy, are evaluated within the coverage limits and the special conditions of the travel health insurance (provided separately as an attachment).

Personal Accident Insurance

Available in all plans. The coverage limit specified on the certificate and/or policy will be paid to the legal heirs or beneficiaries of the insured in the event of the insured’s death due to an accident. Personal Accident General Conditions apply to policy issuance and compensation procedures.

Legal Protection Coverage

Available in all plans. In cases where the insured needs legal advice while within the borders of Turkey, the legal consultation fee is covered within the coverage limit specified on the policy and/or certificate.

Travel Document Renewal Coverage

Available in all plans. In the event of the insured’s passport or equivalent travel document being lost or stolen within the borders of Turkey and proven by an official report prepared by the authorities, the expenses incurred for the renewal of the lost/stolen documents are covered within the coverage limit specified on the policy and/or certificate.

Third Party Liability Coverage

Available in all plans. The insurance company shall make compensation payments up to the upper limit of coverage specified in the policy for death, injury to, or damage to property caused to a third party as a result of an accident caused by the insured while within the borders of Turkey, under the following conditions:

  • The insured shall immediately submit a detailed written application to the insurance company describing the accident that may cause damage.
  • The insured shall not withhold any communication, letter, writing, or legal notice that has been sent to them.
  • The insured shall not make any payments, commitments, or proposals for payment without the knowledge of the insurance company, nor engage in negotiations for compensation.
  • The insurance company, if deemed necessary, is authorized to act on behalf of the insured to respond to the claim for compensation and to legally defend it

Operational Insurance Plans

  • Dental Plan

    Dental Plan Complications covered under the dental plan include tooth extraction, surgical tooth extraction, root canal treatment, implant placement, denture placement, and expenses arising from periodontal procedures. Orthodontic treatments are not covered. Issues such as dissatisfaction with the color or shape of the denture in prosthetic denture application will not be considered complications, and no compensation will be provided. Complications such as delayed bleeding in surgical tooth extraction, gum infection, retained tooth fragments; and issues like improper seating of the implant, displacement, dislodgement, or damage to the jawbone in implant placements are covered under the policy. Compensation will not be provided if there is no pre-treatment plan and panoramic X-ray taken before the initial treatment in the dental plan, or if a current panoramic X-ray is not available at the end of the treatment or when complications arise. In cases where the treatment plan in the dental plan will last for more than 6 months, the second policy must be obtained within 30 days following the issuance of the first policy together with the first policy. In this case, the coverage period is considered as 12 months. If a second policy is issued more than 30 days after the start date of the first policy in cases of long-term treatment planning, the policies are not considered complementary to each other.

  • Eye Plan

    n the eye plan, complications related to refractive surgeries such as excimer laser, LASIK, cataract surgery, ptosis surgery, glaucoma surgery, and retinal detachment surgery are covered under the policy. For excimer laser surgeries, complications such as flap displacement, keratitis, epithelial ingrowth under the flap, and a deterioration of vision by more than 0.75 degrees in the examination conducted 60 days after the surgery are covered. In cataract surgery, complications include bleeding, perforation of the eye, rupture of the lens capsule, loss of transparency in the corneal layer, burn at the incision site, retention of cataract fragments in the eye, infection, retinal detachment, edema in the macula, discomfort, painful eye, drooping eyelid, glaucoma, and/or double vision; a deterioration of vision by more than 1 degree in the examination conducted 60 days after the surgery, and posterior capsular opacification are covered. For ptosis surgery, recurrence of drooping eyelid is covered. In retinal detachment surgery, recurrence of detachment, intraocular bleeding, cataract formation, and glaucoma are covered. Complications such as conjunctival tear, scleral flap damage, loss of vitreous, central visual field loss, decompression retinopathy, infection, bleb leakage, suprachoroidal hemorrhage, and uveitis are covered under glaucoma surgery.

  • Hair Transplant Plan

    In the hair transplant plan, complications arising from the insured/patient not following the recommendations of the performing physician (such as early hair combing and brushing, not following the hair washing procedure, failure to perform the necessary post-hair transplant care, etc.) and the failure of the hair transplant to take hold are excluded from coverage. However, treatments for the failure of transplanted hair follicles to take hold or for the development of infections on the scalp despite adherence to all recommendations, as well as repeat hair transplant procedures, are covered. A doctor’s report confirming adherence to post-hair transplant recommendations is required for the payment of compensation claims. Any revision transplants performed beyond the number of grafts implanted in the initial procedure are not covered under the transplant coverage.

  • Cardiovascular Surgery Plan

    Complications arising after surgeries/interventions such as peripheral vascular surgery, varicose vein surgery, heart valve replacement, valvuloplasty, coronary artery bypass surgery, coronary stent placement, and major vascular replacement, performed in a healthcare institution in Turkey, including but not limited to restenosis and stent migration as indicated in medical literature, are covered under this plan.

    Our thrustworthy partners in Turkey may, if necessary, seek a second opinion from an independent expert in evaluating the insured’s compensation claims. Pharmalps’s partners in Insurance has the final authority regarding the payment of compensation for complications.

    In all cases requiring surgical or medical interventions/applications, expenses for the companion, including accommodation and other expenses incurred by the companion at the healthcare facility, as well as transportation and hotel accommodation expenses, are not covered. (In case an additional companion plan is purchased, transportation (airfare) and hotel accommodation expenses for the companion are covered within the coverage limits.)

  • Orthopedics, Gynecology, General Surgery, ENT, Thoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Aesthetic, Invasive Procedures Plan

    All complications written in the informed consent form signed by the patient before surgery are covered (except for death). As for invasive procedures, coronary angiography, balloon angioplasty, stent placement, and the removal of colonoscopic or gastroscopic polyps are covered. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures are excluded from coverage. For coronary invasive procedures, only restenosis occurring after stent placement and stent migration are considered within the scope of complications. Among gynecological surgeries, complications occurring after cesarean section (excluding early complications such as bleeding and uterine rupture) are included in the coverage. In aesthetic surgeries, revision requests due to personal dissatisfaction with the performed surgery will not be accommodated. However, revisions resulting from surgical failure (such as nasal tip drooping, persistent deviation in rhinoplasty, nasal septum perforation; asymmetry, drooping, implant rupture, and capsular contracture in breast aesthetic surgery) are covered. *Botox applications are not covered under the policy.

Compensation & Payment Procedures

The acceptable compensation amount for the insured within the policy period, in accordance with the coverage they have, is paid based on the relevant coverage defined in the certificate, within the coverage limit and payment ratio specified. The total compensation amount payable, even if there are multiple complications within the same plan and the insured needs to come to Turkey multiple times, cannot exceed the total coverage limit stated on the policy.

This policy does not have a provision for pre-approval.

There is no compensation coverage for natural death in this policy.

The total health expenditure made by the insured is paid to their credit card or bank account after a 10-day review and evaluation period following the submission of the following documents and any additional documents that may be required based on the plan:

Authorization letter signed by the insured to obtain medical documents from the insurer

First surgery report

Statement from the insured regarding the emerged complication (when it started, what complaints occurred, etc.)

Medical report explaining the treatment for the complication, including the surgery report if available

Original invoices showing expenses for healthcare facility, accommodation, and transportation

Copies of the passport’s entry stamp page showing the entry date to Turkey and the first page showing the identification details are also required.

**Insurances are valid only for the agreed hospitals, clinics, which has the International Health Tourism Certificate.  If the patient gets an insurance for a specific treatments but decides to get treated in a different hospital, the insurance won’t cover the possible complications.**
