FAQ Dental Implants

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a durable treatment option for restoring and replacing missing teeth. Implants are designed to mimic the natural tooth root and crown. Our professional oral surgeons and implant team are highly experienced in implants and work closely with the clinic’s master ceramist in the design to create a natural or dramatic result.

Dental implants are a durable, long-term alternative to removable dentures, whether partial or complete. Providing exceptional support and stability for dental crowns is the superior choice for patients in such situations. The base of the implant is known as the post. It bears some resemblance to a titanium screw that firmly bonds with the organic bone in the jaw. The titanium base of the implant is then capped with an artificial tooth that is customised to match the colour and shape of the patient’s natural teeth, resulting in a replacement tooth that is virtually indistinguishable from the other teeth in the mouth.

The solid connection between the implant and the jawbone also provides complete restoration of full mouth function, allowing the patient to confidently eat all their favourite foods.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

There are many benefits to dental implants that make them a superior choice for tooth replacement: Implants make it feasible to replace one or more missing teeth without altering or causing damage to adjacent teeth.

Dental implants can help resolve bite problems and the resulting joint pain. They can prevent teeth from shifting into the space left by missing teeth. Dental implants stabilise teeth, restoring speech and enabling you to chew food properly. Implants provide gum and jaw structure stability, dramatically enhancing one’s natural beauty.

Dental implants offer a means of fully restoring the aesthetic appearance of your smile. We like to think of implants as more than just dental treatments. By putting your favourite foods back on the menu and a confident smile back on your face, implants can kickstart a profound boost in day-to-day wellbeing.

Why do we lose our teeth?

People lose their permanent teeth for many reasons, including accidents, trauma, and disease. One of the most common diseases that can result in the loss of permanent teeth is periodontitis, also known as gum disease. This disease occurs due to bacteria and infection in the gums, which leads to inflammation and the bone and tissue supporting the teeth breaking down.

Pregnancy, osteoporosis, and even some medications can also cause tooth loss. Many adults experience tooth loss, so you’re not alone. Dental implants offer the most incredible comfort of all tooth replacement solutions and avoid the long-term health effects of tooth loss and bone density reduction. Choosing to undergo a dental implant procedure is a big step, but one that can have a significant impact on the state of your health and the quality of your life. Therefore, it’s so important that the procedure be performed with only the best tools, equipment, and materials.

Losing teeth can occur for a wide range of different reasons. Perhaps the tooth was knocked out by an accidental impact or became so severely damaged as to necessitate an extraction, or maybe extensive tooth decay and other dental problems have caused one or more teeth to become loose or even fall out. Regardless of the underlying cause, lost teeth can lead to further oral health problems if left untreated. Fortunately, dental implants are a simple, effective, and permanent solution to the problem of lost and missing teeth. Dental implants are far superior to other options, such as traditional dentures or bridges. They can prevent many of the long-term dental problems known to develop because of the loss of teeth in the jaw, including gradual bone density loss and problems chewing or talking.

Why do we need implants?

Beyond cosmetic reasons, replacing your tooth or teeth will make eating and speaking easier. Gaps in your mouth can also result in bone loss and even change the shape of your face.

What makes dental implants “the gold standard”?

Dental implants are the only permanent tooth replacement option, and they’re designed to last for decades. Because they are surgically inserted into the jawbone, they provide health and functional benefits comparable to those of natural teeth. Since the implant itself mimics the form and structure of a natural tooth and is embedded directly into the jaw to take the place of the entire missing tooth and root, it prevents the loss of bone density.

What is the success rate of dental implants?

Dental implants have achieved a consistently high success rate (over 95%) since their introduction decades ago. Greater success is achieved through a combination of surgical technology, high-quality materials, clinical experience, and long-term maintenance. Naturally, when you undergo any restorative health care treatment, you want to be confident that you’ll receive the absolute best care, both in terms of the skill and capability of the provider and in the quality and effectiveness of the materials used in the procedure. At Happy Smile Clinics, we are committed to giving our patients the best possible result in everything we do, which means using the finest dental implants available. Therefore, we choose to use Nobel BioCare, Straumann, and Hiossen implants in our clinics, as they feature the most effective designs and highest quality materials available today. For dental implants to provide the most excellent combination of longevity, stability, durability, and appearance, they must be manufactured with the highest quality materials. Across virtually all measurements, titanium is the finest dental implant material due to its unique combination of strength, lightweight, and ability to strongly bond with human bone. This last factor is significant, as not all metals can do this.

What is the quality of dental implants?

The shape and structure of the post of the implant also have a significant impact on the connection between the bone and the replacement tooth. Many types of implants have specialised ‘threads’ on the post designed to provide the maximum surface area for the bone to adhere to, increasing the connection’s strength and the bond’s permanence. While there are many different manufacturers of dental implants, Happy Smile Clinic relies on the quality and advanced technology of the dental implants offered by Nobel BioCare, Straumann, and Hiossen. As the industry leader in dental implant innovation, both in design and material development, Nobel BioCare, Straumann, and Hiossen have a proven track record that is renowned worldwide. Happy Smile Clinics feels there is no better choice of dental implants for our patients than Nobel BioCare, Straumann, and Hiossen.

How many teeth can be replaced with implants?

All of them! We can take care of individual teeth with single dental implants, but we also have options to replace multiple teeth or even an entire arch! If the arch as a whole is needed, we can place All-On-4 dental implants, meaning we use four implants to anchor the whole arc.

Are implants better than dentures?

It’s not a matter of being better. It’s more about what’s best for you. Unlike dentures, once placed, implants are not removed for eating or sleeping. Implants can be more expensive than dentures, and the process takes a little longer, but they also last longer than dentures and function and look like natural teeth.

Do dental implants look natural?

Yes. Dental implants look, function, and feel like natural teeth. We try to match them as closely as possible to the shape and colour of your remaining teeth.

Can I eat anything with dental implants?

Yes. Once your implants have completely healed, you can treat them like natural teeth. Many patients report being able to eat foods that they couldn’t eat before surgery and can enjoy chewy and hard foods again. Only liquids and soft foods are allowed during the healing process to prevent irritating your jaw and gums. This can range anywhere from a few days to a week before you can slowly add solid foods to your diet.

How do dental implants prevent bone loss?

Implants are surgically secured into your jawbone and imitate your natural teeth and roots. This simulation helps to keep the bones in your jaw strong and healthy. It’s been shown that an implant will either severely slow or stop bone loss in the jawbone.

Are there any additional procedures needed?

Not always, but three different procedures can accompany implants. Bone grafting is needed if your jawbone is too thin or soft because chewing puts much pressure on your jawbone, and the implant can fail once you begin to eat solid food. A bone graft will strengthen your jawbone using a part of your bone from a different area of your body or synthetic bone material. A few months will be needed for the graft to grow strong enough to support the implant. A sinus augmentation is sometimes required if an implant is put in the upper jawbone, depending on the location of your sinuses. This procedure lifts the floor of the sinuses to give more room for the implant. Bone augmentation is needed if the patient’s jawbone needs additional work. Bone augmentation is a surgical procedure to replace bone surrounding the root of a tooth, making it possible for you to have an implant if you don’t have enough natural bone in your jaw. Unlike other body tissue types, bone can regenerate in the right conditions. A graft makes this process possible while helping to hold your implant and existing teeth in place. Over time, your bone will grow to replace the graft material. Once the site around the graft has successfully healed and been provided, you don’t need any other supporting treatments; you’ll be ready to have your implant placed. There are many reasons why you may not have enough bone to hold an implant securely in place, but you might need a bone graft if: -Your teeth are loose or unstable, or you suffer from gum disease. Gum disease can break down gum and bone tissue. You had a tooth extracted some time ago. The gap left following extraction can sometimes affect the teeth on either side, and the bone can begin to deteriorate. You’ve had lots of infections in your mouth. This can lead to bone loss over time. You’ve had an injury to your mouth. The impact could have led to bone loss.

Is it possible to get dental implants?

One of the biggest reasons people believe dental implant surgery is painful is what they see on the internet. A quick search for dental implant surgery will show you plenty of pictures of people getting holes in their gums, which looks pretty scary if you don’t know what’s happening. However, there is no need to worry, as the procedure itself is not as painful as it looks. Let us use a scale of one to 10, with one representing minimal discomfort and 10 representing excruciating pain. A straightforward dental implant, for a patient with good bones who does not need a lot of soft tissue surgery, has a pain level between two and three in the first 24 to 48 hours, which means over-the-counter medication like Tylenol or Advil will take care of any discomfort they are feeling. After the procedure, you will have difficulty eating regular food as your gums heal, so you will need to eat soft foods for a while. You must also avoid caffeine and tobacco products to prevent implant failure and other complications.

FAQ Dental Veneers

What Are E.MAX® and Zirconia Veneers?

E.max® and zirconia veneers are your path to transformation, turning self-conscious feelings into full-blown confidence. Crafted from ultra-thin glass ceramics permanently bonded to your natural enamel, they’re the secret to achieving the picture-perfect smile makeover or Hollywood smile that many celebrities around the world flaunt. What makes these ceramics extraordinary is their unique blend of strength and aesthetics. They deliver a natural look, impressive durability, and unbeatable stain resistance. These veneers, despite being just a thin layer, create smile designs that are robust, durable, and strikingly lifelike.

In recent years, the demand for metal-free restorations has surged. Patients have grown more concerned about the presence of metal in their mouths and are opting for the most aesthetically pleasing alternatives. This transformation has been made possible with the introduction of advanced ceramics like zirconia and e.max®, replacing older-style feldspathic and leucite-based restorations. These materials offer superior strength and fit, combined with unmatched aesthetics. Over the last decade, companies specialising in metal-free ceramics have consistently improved their products. The latest generation of materials boasts enhanced opalescence coupled with lifelike shades and translucencies. All-ceramic restorations promote healthier gum tissues and deliver long-lasting, dependable results. The absence of metal ensures there’s no darkness around the gum margins, and light is transmitted through these materials, closely mimicking natural teeth.

How Long Do E.MAX® And Zirconia Veneers Last?

E.max® and zirconia veneers are constructed from super-strength pressed glass-ceramic materials, renowned for their remarkable durability. While traditional porcelain veneers are about as sturdy as your natural teeth, e.max® and zirconia veneers take durability to the next level. When expertly crafted and maintained, these veneers can last 10 to 15 years.

At Pharmalps, we recommend safeguarding your investment by taking excellent care of your oral hygiene. This includes limiting sugary foods and beverages, brushing and flossing diligently, staying well-hydrated, and using a nightguard splint if you grind your teeth. The longevity of your veneers significantly depends on your maintenance and care.

How Much Do E.MAX® And Zirconia Veneers Cost?

Achieving your ideal smile with e.max® or zirconia veneers typically ranges from €2000 to €3500 per smile arc. The exact cost depends on the complexity of your unique dental needs. For precise quotes tailored to your specific case, we encourage you to take advantage of our free online consultation. Additionally, we offer Smile Design packages featuring 16 to 24 porcelain veneers. Contact us directly to learn more about the package details.

Can you get zirconia veneers in a more natural colour?

While zirconia has been likened to white metal due to its exceptional flexural strength, it can also be a perfect match for your natural teeth. Zirconia is fabricated using advanced CAD/CAM technology, ensuring an impeccable marginal fit and reducing chair time, along with the likelihood of remakes. Originally available only in its natural white colour, zirconia is now manufactured in an extensive array of shades and translucencies. This makes it effortless to harmonise your restoration with your adjacent teeth. Our skilled master ceramists, operating within our in-house digital dental laboratory, possess the expertise to replicate the nuanced characteristics of natural teeth accurately. Zirconia is an ideal choice for anterior and posterior crowns, as well as bridges.

What is zirconia, and what are its benefits?

Described as akin to white metal, zirconia’s exceptional flexural strength makes it an excellent choice, particularly for individuals with bruxism. Fabricated using state-of-the-art CAD/CAM technology, zirconia restorations ensure an impeccable marginal fit, reducing the duration of chair time and the risk of remakes. This material, once available only in its natural white colour, now offers an extensive range of shades and translucencies, simplifying the process of matching your restoration to your adjacent teeth. Additionally, porcelains can be layered over zirconia, granting our master ceramists the capacity to meticulously reproduce the characteristics found in natural teeth. Zirconia emerges as an ideal choice for both anterior and posterior crowns, as well as bridges.

What is e.max®, and what are its benefits?

E.max® is a pressed or milled lithium disilicate material, slightly less robust than zirconia but still three times stronger than your natural teeth. Available in a broad spectrum of translucencies and shades, our master dental technicians can craft full-contour restorations or employ layering techniques with porcelain to enhance the aesthetic appeal.

What is the difference between e.max® and zirconia?

At Pharmalps, we offer two popular dental veneers: e.max® and zirconia, each with unique attributes and benefits. E.max®, also referred to as lithium disilicate, is ideally suited for creating full crowns to restore damaged or broken teeth. Renowned for its exceptional translucency, e.max® delivers a natural look. On the other hand, zirconia, a type of ceramic material known as zirconia oxide, is available in various shades to achieve the perfect colour match with your existing teeth. Its incredible strength makes it an excellent choice for long-lasting and durable results.

Can veneers fall off?

Yes, they can. There are various reasons why veneers can break, fall off or become damaged. Here are some of them: Age of the veneers: The main reason is the age of the veneers. Porcelain veneers should last at least 10-15 years. But conservatively, veneers last more than 15 years. Over time, the veneers gradually detach from the teeth as the adhesive bond weakens over time and the veneers become loose and fall off. Poor bonding: The second most common reason is that the bonding agent used to adhere the veneers to the teeth was of poor quality. Either not enough time was given for bonding or the technique was incorrect. Either way, it is a problem with the dentist, not the veneers. Tooth decay: Another common reason is when the teeth on which veneers are placed decay. There are many reasons for tooth decay.

It occurs due to lifestyle choices and in some cases due to the effects of prescription medications that some people cannot escape. Teeth grinding: Another common cause is patients’ habit of grinding their teeth at night, or bruxism, for physical or psychological reasons. When bruxism occurs regularly, the force on veneers is great. Veneers cannot withstand the pressure on the inside and may chip, break or become damaged. Lack of care: Negligence is another common reason why veneers fall off or break. Veneers are delicate devices that require good oral hygiene. If they are handled roughly by the wearer, for example by frequently chewing hard foods or grinding teeth, they may break or detach from the mouth.

Will my teeth be shaved excessively?

estorations using e.max®️ and zirconia are designed to be exceptionally thin. These materials are well-suited for minimal preparation veneers, which are perfect for making small adjustments to the shape or alignment of your teeth. With minimal tooth reduction, a customized smile design can be achieved, resulting in long-lasting and more predictable outcomes. This depends on the expertise of your cosmetic dentist and their approach to conserving tooth structure.

Porcelain veneers generally require two types of preparation:

  • Minimal to No-Prep Veneers: If your teeth are already in an optimal position, veneers can be placed with little to no surface alteration. This approach involves minimal shaving and only slight preparation of your tooth’s surface.

  • Prep Veneers: If your teeth are misaligned, crowded, or not ideally positioned for veneers, and you prefer not to undergo orthodontic or Invisalign treatment, our cosmetic dentists may need to prep your teeth. This process involves shaving the teeth to some extent. Thanks to the high strength of e.max®️ and zirconia, these veneers can be crafted to be ultra-thin, ensuring that tooth preparation is minimized as much as possible.

Do E.max® and zirconia veneers stain with tea, coffee and red wine?

E.max® veneers should never discolour; however, if your teeth are prone to discolouration, you should try to avoid or minimise the behaviours that lead to discolouration and look after them with regular hygiene and maintenance.
