Bedwetting
Nocturnal enuresis, also known as enuresis noctura, is the uncontrolled urination during sleep in children aged four to five years and older. During the day, it is often not a problem for those affected to hold their urine, but at night, children regularly suffer from urinary incontinence. Sometimes bedwetting also manifests itself with a strong urge to urinate during the day.
Around 15 to 20 percent of all children under the age of five suffer from occasional urinary incontinence. Boys are more frequently affected by this condition.
What causes bedwetting?
Enuresis noctura can be hereditary or have functional or organic causes. Bladder control disorders often occur in connection with external circumstances. For example, after exciting events or due to changes in the child’s living environment, Reduced production of the hormone ADH can also be responsible for uncontrolled, nocturnal urine loss.
What are the symptoms of bedwetting?
A basic distinction is made between daytime enuresis and nocturnal enuresis. There are also clinical pictures in which a combined form occurs. Furthermore, a distinction can be made between primary enuresis—the child has never been permanently “dry”—and secondary enuresis—the child wets itself even though it is already “dry.”.
Which examinations are carried out to determine enuresis?
During a urological examination, the first step in treatment is an assessment of the genitals. This is followed by a urinalysis and an ultrasound examination of the kidneys and bladder. Possible stress factors can be identified by means of psychological tests. In a further treatment consultation, the creation of a bladder diary and a bedwetting log are then discussed.
