Penile Curvature
A number of patients experience a bending of the penis during erection, sometimes from birth and sometimes in the course of life. This change is usually associated with pain, but in any case, it is annoying and inconvenient, not only for the man but occasionally also for his partner.
Frequency
The change described above is by no means rare; it is estimated to occur in 10% of the male population. Although a curvature can occur in all directions in principle, it usually occurs with an upward bend. In addition to a congenital curvature of the penis (probably due to maldevelopment during penis growth), it is usually an acquired change, i.e., one that only occurs in the course of life, usually after the age of 40.
Causes
The causes have not yet been fully researched. However, it is suspected that minor injuries to the penis during sexual intercourse can lead to inflammation and scarring. This often results in calcium deposits in the erectile tissue.
However, genetic factors or certain medications are also discussed as causes.
Scars and calcium deposits then lead to a loss of elasticity in the erectile tissue and thus to a painful curvature of the penis, at least initially.
