Sperm Analysis (Spermiogram)

Sperms racing towards the egg

During a spermiogram, the man’s sperm cells are checked for fertility, functionality, and sperm count. A spermiogram should be carried out if a man has been childless for more than a year despite regular, unprotected sexual intercourse.

If men have concerns about their fertility, we recommend two spermiograms performed 2-3 months apart. This allows the functionality of the sperm to be determined.

A spermiogram should also be carried out after a vasectomy.

What causes reduced fertility?

Testicular inflammation, operations on the testicles, testicular torsion during childhood, drug use, or testosterone abuse can lead to reduced fertility. Factors for reduced sperm functionality can also be due to a genetic disease in the family or a unilateral or bilateral varicocele.

What requirements must be met for a spermiogram?

Before a spermiogram is carried out, sexual abstinence (no ejaculation) is required for at least 3 days and a maximum of 6 days in order to be able to carry out a meaningful evaluation of the spermiogram.

If you are able to deliver the fresh semen (body-warm)  at our clinic within half an hour, we will provide you with a suitable, sterile container.

If you are able to deliver the fresh semen (body-warm) to our clinic within half an hour, we will provide you with a suitable, sterile container. Otherwise, you can produce sperm undisturbed on site in a special spermiogram room. A pleasant atmosphere with appropriate films and magazines is provided.
