How to Work as a Doctor in Slovenia
Recognition of professional qualifications In the Republic of Slovenia, doctors and dental practitioners (hereinafter referred to as healthcare professionals) are authorized to independently deliver medical services provided they fulfill the conditions stipulated by labor laws and other pertinent regulations, in addition to meeting specific requirements outlined in the Medical Services Act (hereinafter referred to as ZZdrS).
To practice medicine autonomously, a healthcare professional must:
- Possess appropriate educational background and training – qualification.
- Be duly registered in the doctors’ registry.
- Hold a valid medical license granting permission to independently provide medical services within a designated professional domain.
Proficiency in the Slovenian language during medical practice As per Article 11 of the ZZdrS, all healthcare professionals practicing medicine within the Republic of Slovenia are mandated to utilize the Slovenian language.
Required proficiency levels in the Slovenian language For healthcare professionals engaging in direct patient care, a proficiency in Slovenian at level C1 orally and level B2 in writing of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is mandated.
For healthcare professionals not directly involved in patient care, a minimum proficiency in Slovenian at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is required. However, the employer reserves the discretion to stipulate a higher proficiency level in Slovenian if deemed necessary based on the complexity and nature of the work language.
Doctors from Third Countries: a. Specialist Doctors with Sufficient Experience:
1) We will contact and assist you to initiate qualification recognition with the Ministry of Health.
2) Completing a professional exam and language are required, therefore we will give you consulting through requirements for finding a course and arrange your enrolment.
3) We will apply for recognition of specialist title, leading to a granted license.
Doctors from Third Countries: a. Specialist Doctors with Sufficient Experience:
1) We will give you consulting to initiate qualification recognition with the Ministry of Health.
2) We will give you consultancy on finding, participating to completing a professional exam.
*Knowing the Slovene Language is required, therefore we will assist you trough requirements for finding a course and arrange your enrolment.*
3) We will apply for recognition of specialist title, leading to a granted license.
If you are a Specialist Doctor without Sufficient Experience or a Doctor without Specialization:
1) We will give you consulting to initiate qualification recognition with the Ministry of Health.
2) We will assist you finding a required internship, get into a professional exam, and assist you on finding a course.
(As there are language requirements to work as a doctor)
3) We will apply for recognition of specialist title, leading to a granted license.
If you are a doctor with Recognized Professional Qualification in EU or EEA Member States or Switzerland:
1) We will give you consulting to initiate qualification recognition with the Ministry of Health
2) Upon recognition, we will give you assistance on applying for a license through registration with the Chamber.
